Word for macintosh wont let me add words to the dictionary?

i just got a new mac and it is awesome. however, when i am working in word and it doesnt recognise a word that i type, it wont let me "add to dictionary" it only lets me "ignore". which is really annoying because i have to keep on ignoring. HELP?
