if you're into mac, then the only way to go is Final Cut Pro. Wait for the latest version. It'll be the cheapest price yet. It'll be sold as a stand alone program once again. As for a camera, smaller isn't the solution for good video. The price range you have doesn't get you much camera. It'd be really good for you to take a video production class at a local community college. Besides getting great know how in making proper videos, you get to use the colleges equipment. Much better than what you'd be able to purchase. This will also let you know what type of camera to eventually buy.
